Paint Colors are a Pain.

So after we removed all the wallpaper in the bedroom (I’ll be making a DIY guide and more about that whole experience) and used our smelly oil-based primer this was the color I put on the walls. It is called Reflecting Pool by Sherwin Williams. Sounds pretty, and looks pretty.. at first. I didn’t mind the bright bold color this was during the day but when the room is cut off from light or it’s nighttime this color turns DARK and green, and kinda gloomy. (Picture the darker part to the left but all over.)

After I picked out the color for my office I also repainted the bedroom with it. This color is Smoke by Benjamin Moore. You can see the dramatic difference on the right wall.

All in all I much prefer waking up to the new color. One day I’ll become adventurous with paint again, but for now I’m very happy. Oh and don’t mind the sad looking bed, we just upgraded from a queen and I cannot decide on new bedding. It’s on the to buy list.

I really like the new color (Smoke)! Great job!

Thank you! I think it does match the furniture much better than the other color would have. :)

Almost Complete Living Room

So stepping back in time before we owned the house:

The living room now:

You may noticed a couple flaws, but it is a huge improvement even with its flaws! We will finish painting the hallway and touching up the trim quite a bit. I even managed to skip over a couple spots of trim, pure laziness of not taping everything.

From the paint, supplies, furniture, cinnamon pine cones, basically everything short of the dog cost in total about $580.

Like-New Couch: $175 from yard sale.
Dining Table: My dream table was the Parsons Dining Table from West Elm however I opted for a much cheaper similar Exotic Retreat Dining Table from Target. $175
6 Dining Chairs: $30 from Craigslist
Fabric & Supplies to Redo Chairs: $28
Wall Mirror: $15 at a consignment shop.
Cinnamon Pine Cones: $4 (and worth every penny)
1 Gallon Kilz Primer, 1 Gallon Paint, Joint Compound: $(the rest)

I will have a better photo of the dining room once I share the “final” version of it. I have a plan to make it so there’s even more room between the couch and dining area. There will be an entertainment system, tv, and some new window coverings in the near future as well.

Living Room Progress

The very first thing I wanted to change about my house was the wood paneling. Originally, I did not mind just painting it and calling it good. However ambition got the best of me and we filled in every single crack, 4 times! (Ugh!!) We had to use the flexible joint compound which shrinks after you put it in, so a few layers were required. We did try to the stiff kind that did not shrink but it simply crumbled into bits when we went to sand it flat. What a nightmare all that was!

After the cracks were filled I then used spray on orange peel texture to help cover up any wall marks. If you ever use this stuff, make sure you tape or cover everything *and* open the windows. When I sprayed along the fireplace and door frames I held a large piece of cardboard against where I was spraying to block any side splatters.

What’s this door and why does it have joint compound on it?! This door (and the laundry door for that matter) were pretty pathetic looking with all the dog claw marks in them. However, I didn’t want to buy new doors so a little joint compound and paint will do! Just apply and sand it down.

I know this post was a few years ago; but I was wondering if you could tell me about how many hours you spend on this project?? Thanks!

It’s Alive!

Why hello there, I have created this blog in memory of my first home owning experience. I’ve learned a lot already, and I hope to share a lot to help others not make the same mistakes I have. I also will use this as a portal to share my favorite links, guides, inspiration, and more. Let the journey begin!
